Decriminalizing Sex Work Campaign in DC

On April 5 at 11:10 am, we had the “Decriminalizing Sex Work Campaign in DC” zoom event where two of our alums: Breya Johnson MA’20 and Ele Simon MA’20 shared their experience working on the campaign to decriminalize sex work in DC as part of Professor Matthiesen’s Introduction to WGSS class, which introduces students to power mapping and organizing strategies. Watch the recording now. Yulee Symposium with Loretta Ross

On Wednesday, March 30th from 5:00-7:00 PM, our Yulee Symposium this year featured noted reproductive justice and civil rights activist Loretta Ross (Smith College). Her talk focused on effective social movement tactics and the history of radical reproductive justice in the US.

Black Feminist Leadership For Reproductive Rights: Flo Kennedy’s Legacy

On October 4th, Dr. Randolph explained how Flo Kennedy was a firm believer that Black power can inform the women’s liberation movement and had a lot of power as a lawyer and as an activist. Additionally, Dr. Randolph brought up topics including  the birth control as Black genocide debate, the role of Black politicians in decriminalizing abortion, and the importance of intersectionality as a framework for reproductive justice.

Abortion Access in the US: What Is Its History and What Needs to be Changed?

On October 1st, our distinguished panel featuring Professors Johanna Schoen, Karen Weingarten, and Heather Latimer (author of Reproductive Acts: Sexual Politics in North American Fiction and Film) panelists did a fantastic job of describing the long history of restrictions on abortion, placing the recent Texas SB law within the context of this history. They also discussed the relationship between disability rights and anti-abortion discourse, offered nuanced perspectives on Latinx views on abortion, and examined the power and racial implications of dystopian accounts such as Handmaid’s Tale. WGSS 2021 Welcome Back Mixer

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Welcome Back Mixer on September 29th! We had a wonderful time speaking with students and professors of WGSS. We also bid adieu to our former director Dr. Daiya and welcomed our new Director Dr. Tambe. We look forward to this upcoming year and we are excited for all of the events to come!

PhD Seminar: How to Apply to WGSS PhD Programs and Other Disciplines

On September 27th, WGSS Program Director Ashwini Tambe conducted a workshop on applying to doctoral programs. Dr. Tambe discussed the typical components of humanities and social science doctoral programs, the job market for PhDs in WGSS and other fields, and options for PhD programs in WGSS. Dr. Tambe also shared tips for constructing effective personal statements and CVs and answered students’ questions. If you missed the event, watch the recording.
